How do you track a newborn's feeds and diapers?

Write down the start time of every feed, minutes per breast or the bottle amount in oz or ml, and each wet and dirty diaper. Newborns usually feed 8 to 12 times a day and need 6 or more wet diapers a day from day 5, so a simple 24-hour sheet makes it easy to see if you're on track.

Day 1 to 28 to 121 on day 1, 2 on day 21+ (black, sticky)

Formula-fed babies often feed less often after the first weeks, about every 3 to 4 hours.

How to use the log

  1. Each row is one hour of the day, starting at the time you pick. Write the exact start time of each feed.
  2. Breastfeeding: write the minutes on the left and right. Bottle: write the amount in oz or ml and circle F (formula) or BM (breast milk).
  3. Tick Wet or Dirty for every diaper. Both? Tick both.
  4. Before bed or at your pediatrician visit, fill in the totals at the bottom.

When to call your pediatrician

  • Your daily totals are below the guide for your baby's age, especially wet diapers.
  • Fewer wet diapers than expected for your baby's age (after day 5, fewer than 6 in 24 hours), or dark yellow urine.
  • A temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher in a baby under 3 months. Call right away, day or night.
  • Very sleepy, floppy or hard to wake for feeds, or less alert than usual.
  • Refusing feeds, or several feeds in a row that are much smaller than usual.
  • Signs of dehydration: dry mouth, no tears, a sunken soft spot on the head, or no poop along with very few wet diapers.
  • Yellow skin or eyes that's spreading or getting deeper, especially in the first week.
  • Forceful or green vomiting, or blood in the poop.

Call 911 (or your local emergency number) if your baby has trouble breathing, turns blue or gray around the lips, or won't wake up.

If something feels off, trust your gut and call. That's what they're there for.

Frequently asked questions

What should I write on a newborn feeding log?

For each feed, write the start time, minutes on each breast or the bottle amount, and whether it was formula or breast milk. Tick a box for every wet and dirty diaper. At the end of the day, add up feeds, bottle totals and diapers. Those are the numbers your pediatrician usually asks about.

How long should I keep a feeding log?

Hospitals and pediatricians often ask parents to log feeds and diapers in the first weeks, until feeding is going well and your baby is back to birth weight. Some parents keep going longer, for peace of mind, for a baby born early, or to share the night shift. Your pediatrician can tell you when it's OK to stop.

How do I print the log on A4 paper?

Choose A4 above before you press Print. The sheet resizes to fit one A4 or US Letter page in portrait. In the print dialog, keep the scale at 100% (or "Default") and turn on background graphics if you want the soft shading.

Is there a log that both parents can fill in?

The paper log works best stuck to the fridge or kept by the changing table. If you're taking turns at night or have a nanny or grandparent helping, an app like Feedoo Baby keeps one shared log that everyone sees on their own phone.
